What We Learned in October:
We began October with a seasonal focus on apples. We spent our time baking with apples, making applesauce, muffins, bread, and cookies! At this age, the children learn best through doing. They learned about dicing, slicing, chopping, and mixing ingredients, which they enjoyed tremendously. Although most children enjoy preparing the food, not everyone is enthusiastic about eating it. We always encourage it but never force it. Having an "apple tasting contest" helped us figure out which apples everyone liked the most. It turns out the class favorite was Granny Smith. We visited the Farmer's Market in the Train Park, where each child brought some apples, pears, and carrots. This experience inspired us to open our own vegetable stand in the dramatic play center so that we could re-enact the shopping experience. This helped with learning all the names of fruits and vegetables. We also began our leaf study with a leaf walk throughout our neighborhood. This allowed us to talk about all the colorful changes in their environment. The kids sorted leaves by size, color, and shape. They also created autumn art, played a leaf game, did puzzles, and drew colorful pictures. We enjoy weekly sing-alongs with Moses' grandma, Beverly, every Friday. She brings her guitar and teaches us new songs.
We are looking forward to an exciting November with your children.
All the best to our Room 3 families,
Margaret, Maggie, and Masuma
